I had a wonderful time in Leicester Cathedral yesterday. This was an event organised by the Cathedral to celebrate the first anniversary of the re-internment of King Richard 3rd – the last Plantagenet King of England.

My aim was to involve visitors viewing the tomb (and other parts of the Cathedral) to stay a little longer and to try a free calligraphy session.

The visitors aim was to complete an attendance certificate, writing their name in Gothic style and to colour the illuminated letter. By all accounts the event was a great success and I hope there will be more to come in the future. Here’s some lovely feedback from one family who came to try their hand.

“Dear Jane

You asked for feedback from today’s calligraphy workshop in Leic Cathedral….?

All I can say is a BIG thank you!  I came with my 2 sons at @11am and you were so incredibly patient with us all.  My elder son, Matthew, had vehemently insisted that he would NOT join in prior to meeting you and my younger son, Jonathan, had towed along to please his mum, but then got v frustrated by not being able to get the grip of the pen correct.  You were so lovely with us all…. M was thrilled that, for once, he managed to achieve something artistic, (not his strength by any means), J was so gently managed by your constant encouragement that, for once he did not give up, and I was just blissfully able to listen in and observe my 2 boys being creative , whilst being creative myself too.  Wonderful!!

Please, pass my thanks back to Andrew too for organising the event and encourage him to do MANY  more of such creative ideas in that very special place for the community in the future.

And Calligraphy especially is something none of us had tried before and found very therapeutic in the process.

All best wishes to you in your artistic ventures… may they all be so wonderfully uplifting to us all

Liz, Matthew and Jonathan Mills”.
